48-year-old arrested for 34 burglaries BY ANDREW KING

&

McMaster Heap

Veterinary practice

SAM’S DENTAL DAY OUT T

HE month of August is “DENTAL” month at McMaster and Heap Vets. We realise the importance of sparkling teeth, fresh breath and healthy gums in your pet. Most pet owners don’t thoroughly check their pets mouth therefore it is up to us as vets to examine each tooth looking for signs of plaque, tartar buildup, erosive lesions (holes in the enamel), fractured or diseased teeth, dead teeth and missing teeth. We also carefully examine up under the gum margin checking for exposed roots and we assess the gums, tonsils and tongue for ulcers, cancers, injury, infection, cysts and many more. Most cats and dogs continue to eat normally with a sore, diseased mouth. They will often have normal appetites, energy levels and interact and play as per usual. Some clinical signs you may experience are a terrible breath, drooling saliva more than usual with wet looking lips, rubbing of the mouth along surfaces, not wanting to pick up and play with toys or bones and maybe a bit head shy. You may also notice your pet is eating more slowly or refusing dry food, preferring only the soft variety.

Recently I saw a fabulous 11 year old black Labrador, Sam, who for the past month had been eating her dry food rather slowly. She would pick up kibble and drop it, taking ages to get through her days food—very unlike a Labrador! Canned food wasn’t a problem. Her clinical exam was normal although her breath wasn’t fresh! She had moderate tartar on all her teeth but her gums looked healthy. She resented me checking out her mouth thoroughly, which was unlike her. Her blood and urine tests were unremarkable. She was admitted for a dental

examination under general anaesthesia, scale and polish and digital dental xrays if warranted. Once the tartar was scaled off her teeth looked great. We probed all her teeth checking for erosive lesions, fractures or decay. One lower premolar tooth looked slightly discoloured (this can mean the tooth is dead) so we xrayed the premolar teeth on the left side. The tooth in question had abnormal tooth roots on xray so it was removed and the socket sutured closed. All Sam’s teeth looked worn down and blunt, which can happen in dogs who chew stones or bones a lot. I think through hard chewing she had damaged this premolar’s roots causing her neurogenic pain and possibly infection, resulting in difficulty eating anything hard. Sam was discharged on antibiotics, antiinflammatories and pain medications. Hopefully she will make a full recovery and be back to devouring her food. Preventative homecare is a vital part of keeping your pet’s teeth and gums healthy. At McMaster & Heap we recommend dental biscuits designed to clean teeth and fight plaque as well as tooth brushing in some instances. There are also toys, mouth washes and treats designed to help with plaque control. So bring in your treasured friend for a FREE dental assessment with a skilled nurse. If dental surgery is advised you will receive a FREE bag of dental dry

The man who allegedly broke into the Merivale Mall and other nearby retail buildings has been caught. Labourer Andrew Wayne Smith, 48, was arrested after police executed a search warrant in Shirley. He has been charged with 34 burglaries. He has entered no plea and was remanded in custody to when he appeared in the district court on August 8. Last week the Nor’West News reported the Merivale Mall had been broken into via its roof. Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Anderson said over the past month there had been a “spike” in night-time burglaries. Shops and commercial premises were targeted and broken into overnight over a month-long period with tills and cash targeted. Although police have made an arrest, they say it is a timely reminder for shops and commercial premises that deal in cash, to secure it away at night, have adequate lighting around your shop front, and ensure you have a functioning alarm

QUICK RESULT: A man has been charged with 34 counts of burglary including the break-in to the Merivale Mall. that is working and turned on. Meanwhile, a woman has been trespassed for asking for money outside Northlands. Last week, it was reported that businesses in the northwest area had been concerned with the amount of people asking for money on the streets outside of their shops. Sergeant Brendon Strieker said they were working with other agencies to try and help out people as well as working with the shop owners. “It is another example of

how a simple and practical approach can get success,” he said. The recent community policing operation ‘Karapu’ had identified ‘begging’ or people asking for money on the street as one of the bigger problems retailers are facing. Sergeant Strieker said that once they had identified the problems they could move into the response phase of the operation. “All of the charges relate to night-time burglaries at commercial and retail buildings, including Merivale Mall.

Residents call for restricted parking BY ANDREW KING

Ilam residents have asked for parking restrictions on their street. People on Hamilton Ave want time-restricted parking installed to deal with non-residents who park there all day. The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board will look at the proposal today and make a decision if it will install P120 signs between Lothian St and Karo Pl along Hamilton Ave. The estimated cost is $600 and will be funded from the 2014/15 capex road marking and signs budget. Board chairwoman Val Carter said that residents were having trouble with students parking and walking to class, leaving their vehicles for long periods of time. “I don’t think they are a huge problem,” she said. “Parking is becoming a bit of a city-wide problem and we just need to get the balance right.” P120 parking restrictions are presently installed on Hamilton Ave in between Karo Place and southeast of Otara St. This forms part of the Fendalton Village Shopping Centre Area Parking Plan which was

STILL IN ORANGE: Even when Izic Placid is not on the field playing league, he still gets around in orange during the day. PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN So Izic how does it feel to be the top dogs this season? It is overwhelming, it’s still slowly setting in. It is a pretty good feeling. It has been a long time between drinks, what did you do to prepare for that final? We just had to prepare well. We have a good coach who knows what we have to do. He has a lot of experience and walked us through just what we needed to do. Do you remember the last time the seniors won it? I was just a kid at the time. I

was in the 2008 and 2010 finals with the Tigers but this time we got over the line. How do you as a captain manage the nerves of a big game as well as being the guy who has to lead the team? It was pretty hard, I had a lot on my shoulders. I talked to the guys from 1998 and they said I had to

bring it home. It was my job to get the team motivated and I had to bring the guys through. You won the Mel Cooke memorial for your man of the match performance in the final, what does that mean to you? It is overwhelming, to be the captain and man of the match it is an unreal feeling. It could have been anyone that day but I just had a really good game. It makes me feel like all my hard work has paid off. What was the off-field celebrations like after the final whistle sounded?

boy through and through We went back to the clubrooms it was the best feeling ever. Walking in with the boys and Eye of the Tiger was playing. Everyone doing the haka in their orange. There were kids everywhere it was just amazing. It was definitely one of the best times at the clubrooms. There seems to be quite a good number of fans that follow the Tigers around, do they help come game day? The supporters are part of the reason we won. They have helped us get over the line a lot this season. Without them we would have been playing for no one and it would have been hard to do with no fans. What has been the difference this year compared to previous ones? The last three years we had been struggling. We didn’t have any commitment, I don’t think we had one full team training so that was no good. This year having the coach we did on board was awesome. He brought the respect back for the club. He got the dedication back from all the players and made them all get stuck in. There is always talk about culture in team sport, what’s the Papanui Tigers’ culture like? There has been a massive turn around. Nigel Thompson has had a big part to play on and off the field. He gets all the kids involved and he does it out of the goodness out of his heart. What is it like to be coached by former Warrior Shane Endacott?

The best thing for me is sharing his knowledge from the Warriors. We have continued to learn and at every training he teaches you something new. One-on-one he has stuff to show you to help your game. He is one of the best things that has happened for Papanui. Do you live in the ‘Nui’ (Papanui)? I was born and raised in the Nui. What got you into league? My dad, Aven Placid. He’s a league player himself and a boxer, he has done a lot. He has shown me everything I know and he guides me in my life today. He lives in the Nui also. He has been in the same house for about 40 years now. Did your father play for Papanui? Yeah, he did. Although he has been right around the clubs. What is your best moment playing league so far? Winning the grand final this year. It was especially special with my son as the ball boy. We ran out the tunnel together which was awesome. Does your son get into league? Yeah, he gets into it for sure. I’ll take a wild stab in the dark and say he plays for Papanui as well? He plays for the Nui that’s – the only club he will play for as long as I am around. Would you ever play for another team in the city? No. I’ve been here since I was a kid, around 19 or 20. I couldn’t

go to another club. Papanui is my home and there is nothing better than being at home. I hear that you have missed out on a spot in the Canterbury Bulls team, are you going to fight to get a spot in that team? Yeah, it is something I would like to be involved with but I will have to step up to get in. It would cap this year off if I made the Bulls but we will just have to see. I will keep training and maybe I will get a call up. What do you do during the off season? I train hard on myself and do some boxing. I have a fight coming up on August 29 so there is no rest for the wicked. I am fighting a guy from Sydenham, he also plays league. I am not the main event, just on the undercard. What do you do for a job? I work as a plumber. I do a bit of drain laying, water blasting, all sorts really we are pretty flat-out. Are you married? No, just got a partner with two kids. How old are you? I’m 26. Finally, what is the best part of playing for Papanui? It is just a great club and it is getting better. Nigel Thompson has been massive for us. He has taken the club to another level. He has made it so much more familyorientated which is good. It will make sure we have players coming through.

MULTI-TALENTED: As well as playing league, Placid will keep himself busy training for an upcoming boxing bout on August 29.

Bridge repairs •From page 1 The up-coming repairs to sections of Carlton Mill Bridge are due to damage suffered in the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. Repairs include demolishing and rebuilding the north wingwall (the wall that leads onto the bridge near Carlton Mill Rd), crack injection of the east, west and south wingwalls and plaster and repainting of select locations. The remedial work involves repair of cracks to prevent water ingress and further deterioration. The work will be done in two stages. Stage one will be on the north-west side of the bridge and stage two will be on the south-east side of the bridge. During stage one the footpath along Harper Ave on the north of the bridge will be closed to pedestrians. This will mean the footpath within Little Hagley Park will be a no exit. Pedestrians heading east should continue towards Harper Ave and cross to North Hagley Park at the traffic lights. On Carlton Mill Rd, a footpath will be open beside the work site within the lane closure area. Cyclists may wish to dismount as the area will be small. Pedestrians will be able to cross at the traffic lights as normal. Work will be between 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and may take place on weekends to carry out any essential work. Flooding plan in place Residents in the Flockton Basin now have a plan in place to fix their flooding problem. Remediation plans will reduce the risk of flooding in the area benefiting at least 585 properties. Since the earthquakes the area has been struck with severe flooding, which at times swamped houses. Shirely-Papanui Community Board member Jo Byrne, who lives in the area and lobbied for city council to address the flooding, was relieved there was a plan now in place to help residents. Work is expected to take two years and will be completed by winter 2017. “I feel excited and relieved that something is finally going to happen,” she said. She said while the options would remove the same amount of water at the same rate, special care had to be given to those downstream. The city council has decided to progress the Stapletons Rd flood remediation option through to detailed design and construction. Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team’s infrastructure rebuild general manager John Mackie said the option was aligned with what the public wanted. “This option aligns with the things people told us were important in public feedback about all three options – the impact on residents and the environment, and reducing the flood risk in the

He said the three options were similar in resilience and cost, but the Stapletons Rd method enhanced the landscape in the longer term, with improved overall quality of trees, walkways and access to the waterway. “The ecology of the creek along Stapletons Rd will also be improved – providing a healthier habitat for fish and invertebrates,” said Mr Mackie. City councillor Pauline Cotter said: “The Banks Ave route – Option A – was the least favoured option from public consultation and the one that received impassioned responses from Bank Ave residents. On the balance of things, this option just did not stack up in terms of the impact it would have on residents and the local landscape. “The Stapletons Rd option re-

ceived a number of responses from people supporting the proposal as it will provide some additional flood risk relief to their properties, and also presents an opportunity for landscape enhancement. “This option, when considered alongside the maintenance, culvert removal, pumping and waterway widening work undertaken through the Mayoral Flood Taskforce and the Land Drainage Recovery Programme, will give residents assurance that the risk of flooding in affected areas will be reduced,” Cr Cotter said. Community feedback placed the Warden St, Shirley Intermediate School, Marian College, Richmond Park and Residential Red Zone piped bypass – Option B – as the most favoured option, mostly because it was perceived

to have the least amount of impact for residents and the environment, said Mr Mackie. However, it was ranked low during the MCA due to slightly higher construction costs and uncertainty around the future use of the Residential Red Zone (RRZ), which meant the risk of not completing work by winter 2017 was too high, he said. The Option B alternative route through Medway St avoids the residential red zone and has a limited number of affected landowners. However, there is a risk that needing access to privately-owned land may delay the scheme’s delivery. This, combined with no real opportunity for environmental improvement, and a higher construction cost saw this alternative route option score lower than Option C and A, he said.

Facility upgrades for St Albans Park BY ANDREW KING

St Albans Park is set to get a new set of toilets and pavillion. Work will begin soon to demolish the toilet block and pavilion to rebuild a set of new facilities. The city council has allocated $370,000 to complete the project. Meanwhile, the city council l has also planned a $1 million upgrade to the turf at St Albans Park that will begin in 2018. St Albans Residents Association wants to ask the city council to bring forward the new turf project. SARA co-chair Emma Twadell said at the moment the playing surface is just a mess and it is very hard for sport to function while it is

Keep looking when cooking BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

The week has been reasonably quiet with seasonrelated incidents including chimney fires and false alarms. The latter included systems proving faulty and people reporting things that turned out to be steam thought to be smoke and red lights thought to be fire. We also attended quite a number of ambulance backup calls. There were only a couple of cooking fires, both around dinner time and both involving people leaving the kitchen with the stove-top heating food. The advice never changes. Stay with the food you’re cooking or as the old mantra said: “Keep looking when you’re cooking.’’ A spectacular fire on Richmond Hill last Saturday morning occurred in

DANGER: Leaving pots unattended on a stove-top greatly increases the chance of a fire. a house with subsidence underneath and the real risk of the entire property slipping away. The danger of entry meant we were called a couple of further times to the same place for smouldering and re-ignition. That the fire was probably the result of arson just makes us a bit more frustrated and angry.

A digger involved in the demolition of a house in Lower Styx Rd on Tuesday caught fire and the operator stood helplessly as hydraulic fluid ignited and spread to completely involve the machine. Brooklands and St Albans crews could only put out the remains when they arrived. Not a good day for the digger driver.

Bishopdale Primary School celebrated Maori Language Week with performances by their senior cultural group and one of their junior cultural groups. A recent assembly was arranged for parents and others at school, at which they unveiled the school’s new haka. The children have been putting in a lot of practice under the supervision of their cultural teacher Whaea Lou and principal Sue Fisher. A spokesperson for the school said: “Matua Teira Nera has written this haka for Bishopdale School. He has presented it to Kai Tahu, our local iwi, and they have granted us permission to perform it. This is a great honour for us as a school and we would like to take this opportunity to thank Matua for this precious taonga that he has gifted our school. Matua wants us Kura Papakohatu, Bishopdale School, to carry this haka with us where ever we travel around the world and throughout our lives. So we carry a little bit of Kura Papakohatu, Bishopdale School with us wherever we go.”

Bid to reduce ripple effect on motorway BY KYLE KNOWLES Variable speed limits on the Northern Motorway have been touted as a temporary solution to congestion woes. This means changing the speed limit on the motorway depending on the congestion each day to prevent a bottleneck at Belfast. Two New Zealand Transport Agency staff members discussed the proposal at the last Waimak-

ariri District Council meeting. NZTA southern regional director, Jim Harland, said the changes will begin later this year. “Internationally, the introduction of variable speed limits along a motorway which slows traffic before there is the breakdown in traffic flows, has shown to improve overall flows and travel times as the slower speeds keep everyone moving.” Vehicle numbers on the North-

ern Motorway during the morning peak currently exceed the road’s capacity. Mr Harland said as a result there is a breakdown in traffic flows at peak hours when motorists hit the end of the motorway at Belfast, slowing from 100km/h to 60km/h. “This sends a ripple effect through the network which reduces travel speeds on the motorway to less than 30km/h by 6.30am and continues through to around 8am.”

Mr Harland said if the changes were successful, the variable speeds will remain in operation until the NZTA sees improved traffic flows, after construction of the Western Corridor and Northern Arterial. Those roads are not scheduled to be finished until between 2019 and 2021. Changes to the bus routes and services are also being introduced in an attempt to ease traffic congestion on the motorway.

A passion for hairdressing drives salon’s growth

Starting out in Barbadoes Street in 2008 with a team of three, Evolve Hair & Beauty has gone from strength to strength since moving to Homebase in Marshlands Road, says owner Tracey Barnao.

T

racey, who has been in the industry since 1995, says hairdressing has been her passion from a young age, and that she is still as passionate as she was then, if not more so. Before owning her own salon, she was the South Island colour technician for Redken, training hairdressers with Redken products.

Her new business had been going for almost two years when the Christchurch earthquake hit and they had to leave their salon. After making Homebase the new location for Evolve Hair & Beauty two years ago, they have grown to a team of 13, including 10 senior stylists and two intermediate stylists training towards their qualifications.

We attend regular training opportunities both inside and outside of the salon,” Tracey says. The salon’s hair services range from colouring, cutting, colour correction, perming, straightening and extensions to styling for weddings and school balls, while fully qualified beautician Kayla provides waxing, spray tans, makeup artistry, acrylic and gel nails and pedicures. “A great haircut isn’t enough to keep a client any more as there are a lot of salons within kilometres. At Evolve Hair & Beauty, we understand the importance of giving the very best haircut and exceptional customer service.” Tracey sees forming great relationships with clients as vital, so Evolve Hair & Beauty

orking in partnership with families to support the children in their care to reach their full potential is the foundation of the learning philosophy at Sovereign Star Nursery and Preschool. Everyday’s programme and each child’s assessment are designed with this outcome in mind. It’s thanks to the staff ’s professionalism and passion about high-quality early childhood education that this new Kaiapoi nursery and preschool has grown considerably over the past few months, more quickly than even the management expected. The teachers are inspired by the new ideas and new approaches that are now an integral part of early childhood education. It’s also great that they work in a specific-to-purpose, light, bright and airy facility, full of wonderful resources and equipment. The babies’ nursery is specially designed to recreate a calm home-like culture and the staff are dedicated to nurturing the infants in their care.

The centre maintains a high ratio of teachers to children to ensure an environment where the children have the opportunity to develop a lifelong love of learning. FUTURE PLANNERS: Cotswold School pupils (left to right), Keegan Burnett, 9, Ravnit Nand, 9, Jessica Cade, 9, Jasmine Foulter, 10, and Chloe Screen, 9 work on their design for Legopolis at the Imagination Station in Cathedral Junction.

Using imagination to solve problems

Cotswold School senior pupils have been to Imagination Station in Cathedral Junction. The Imagination Station is a charity run, not-forprofit play and education centre with a whole lot of Lego which has been open since January. The students have been working on their problemsolving skills as part of the Keeping Ourselves Safe unit. Legopolis, made from Lego, is a brand new city in the South Island but there have been a few problems. Legopolis was not designed very well as there are four supermarkets all next to each other and all the

roads lead to nowhere. Town planners were needed to join together and design a new layout for the mixed up city. The pupils are challenged to think about all the types of places they would like to see around the city and how to best rearrange the city. Critical thinking and teamwork is needed to be able to build the best Legopolis City. Ravnit Nand, 9, enjoyed working as a team. Pupils were able to choose their role, such as safety officer, town crier, town scribe, town banker, enforcement officer and mayor, and then work in a team to brain-

storm all the possible places and buildings that might be needed in a new city. Interesting discussions were taking place over ‘needs’ v ‘wants’ as some students felt they needed a 10-pin bowling alley while others thought that it wasn’t that important. One group felt they did not need a hospital as they already had a doctors surgery. After allocating coloured Lego blocks to different parts of the city the building could take place. The pupils rearranged the existing buildings and roads and placed the new colour co-ordinated buildings on the board.

Empowering children Teaching pupils to be cautious around strangers and stand up for themselves is a vital part of growing up. Pupils and teachers at Cotswold School have been practising age-appropriate people safety skills. The programme called Kidpower teaches safe classroom and playground behaviour. It is run by Kidpower Teenpower Fullpower New Zealand which has been in operation since 1993. Consisting of eight powers the pupils learn that their body belongs to them and each power can help. Some powers are familiar such as brain, body, voice and get help powers. New powers such as stay aware, fence, move away and rubbish bin provide kids with a range of skills to successfully manage their own behaviour. The stay aware power teaches pupils to know their environment and be

Using fence power consists of having hands up and in front of you with one foot in front of the other. Combined with voice power saying ‘please stop’ helps students clearly communicate with their peers if they are unhappy about a situation. The rubbish bin power is where you put throwaway comments that don’t matter

into a pretend rubbish bin. The lesson room 11 had was presented by Kidpower co-ordinator Frith Daniels. The class of five-yearold’s enjoyed learning new techniques and had fun practising their powers. Finally they learnt how to get help from a busy adult. By touching an adults arm and saying: “It’s about my safety” they will immediately get the help they need.

Not all first aid certificates

are created equal While first aid courses must achieve prescribed New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA) standards to be certified, not all training providers deliver the same course.

T

here can be big differences in first aid courses between a range of training providers. Some courses range from teaching only the basic NZQA specified content and nothing else, to providing detailed and comprehensive content designed to familiarise participants to a wide range of likely emergencies. Providers offering shortened courses or courses not meeting NZQA training requirements are now in the spotlight. NZQA and the Department of Labour have published a factsheet to outline requirements for providers, learners and employers for first aid training based on currently registered NZQA unit standards. Below are a summary of what we think you should know. Course differences Training providers can market their courses under a wide range of names such as Essential First Aid, Workplace First Aid or Comprehensive First Aid and many other eye-catching titles. The term workplace can vary from a small office to a large factory where the risks and potential injuries are just as wide. Employers should be cautious in thinking that a one-day workplace first aid course will meet their needs in industries such as construction, engineering, forestry and industrial. More advanced learning is important to meet the proper workplace assessments and meet health and safety obligations. The content of courses can also vary. Employers should check to see the first aid course is relevant to their particular industry risks. If there are risks of falling, or medium to high injury, then take careful look in the shortened courses as these subjects may not be covered. It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that employees attend courses appropriate to their industry risks. Unit standard-based first aid training These are the minimum requirements for both the initial and refresher training. The minimum duration of first Raewyn Clegg aid training and Registered Teacher of assessment will be for Piano and Theory of training based on: Music. • Unit standards 6400, 6401 (or 26552) 29 Lancewood Drive and 6402 (or 26551), Halswell a minimum of 12 Ph 322-9377

hours’ training and assessment • Unit standards 6401 (or 26551) and 6402 (or 26552), a minimum of eight hours’ training and assessment • For refresher training, where the learner’s certificate is no older than two years and three months from date of issue, a minimum of six hours’ training and assessment. First aid training must cover the outcomes of the NZQA first aid unit standards being assessed and any additional modules identified by the employer through the workplace risk assessment process as outlined in Department of Labour guidelines. Only first aid training providers accredited by NZQA can award the credits and issue a first aid certificate. Care needs to be taken to ensure that the provider is actually registered with NZQA for this purpose. NZQA conduct regular External Evaluative Reviews on all training providers. New Zealand Red Cross is proud to hold a double Highly Confident accreditation in both Educational Performance and Capability in Self-Assessment. This means that NZ Red Cross is a Category One training provider. First aid refresher training Refresher training is required every two years to maintain the certificates. This is

a requirement and not something for the provider to decide. The requirement allows for a three-month period of grace, so the cut off period is two years and three months which should allow sufficient time to enrol onto a suitable course. The refresher training should ensure the certificate holder is current in first aid practice appropriate to their individual workplace requirements. If a certificate is not renewed for more than three calendar months from the second anniversary date of issue, it will be necessary for the certificate holder to complete full first aid training to maintain currency. For the purposes of workplace first aid emergency management, employers will need to ensure that their first aid personnel maintain competency at all times. Contact New Zealand Red Cross to discuss your training requirements or visit www.redcross.org.nz. Download our free lifesaving app as additional help to ensure that knowledge and help is always at your fingertips.

Big cider satisfaction By Yvonne Lorkin The humble apple is a tight package of huge potential — you can bake, stew and fry them, juice, crumble and mousse them. Foam concrete and healthy homes

C

anterbury Foam Concrete Limited is a locally owned and operated firm which understands the problems caused by rising damp and is there to help. A great number of houses in Christchurch have a problem with rising damp. Most timber floor houses built before the mid-1970s have scant underfloor insulation or nothing at all. Many of them have been built in areas that were previously swamp, and a persistent high water table compounds the problem. Independent tests have shown that every 24 hours, up to 40 litres of water can rise from the ground and enter a house. This moisture will show up in several ways such as mildew, mold growth, condensation, musty odours and, in the long term, a gradual deterioration of the building. More importantly, there is a growing

awareness among health experts that dampness, rather than cold, produces health problems. In most homes, steps will have been taken to insulate the ceiling and wall cavities, but problems will continue unless rising damp is treated at the source. Sealing the ground with foam concrete is an effective answer. Foam concrete is free-flowing and easy to pump into confined areas such as the cavity below a wooden floor, where poor ventilation and lack of subfloor insulation combine with damp ground to create excessive water vapour transmission or rising damp. Foam concrete requires no surface finishing and does not hinder the installation of other services. Contact Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd for more information on 03 376 4608 or 0508 362 626.

Smooth-Air offers homes with

all-day comfort

N

owadays, we want warm, wellinsulated and brightly lit homes, but modern family living can lead to high levels of moisture in our tightly constructed houses. Baths, showers, cooking and even our own perspiration can increase the humidity and moisture to much higher levels, resulting in condensation and homes that are more difficult to heat. The experts at Smooth-Air have designed a cost-effective solution, specific to New Zealand’s conditions. The Dry-Matic system is perfect for new or existing builds and rental accommodation. Usually installed in under half a day and once fitted, costs as little as 10 cents a day to run. The Dry-Matic works in a number of ways. It replaces stale, moist air with clean, dry air; reduces the concentration of airborne dust mites and allergens; channels solar energy from roof and ceiling spaces into cooler living spaces

P m A D g n i s i AttAck R ...at the source

and reduces concentrations of outgassing from new furniture and building materials. Asthma sufferers may receive real relief, furniture and furnishings can be protected from moisture damage and the system offers security as doors and windows can remain closed while the Dry-Matic circulates fresh, dry air around the house. NOR’WEST NEWS

INTRODUCING... Peter Hampton We all need to make decisions and choices in life every day. One of those choices is what career path we take. After 30 years in sales and marketing, Kathryn and I have chosen the path of real estate. Another choice we have made is to live in the North West area of Christchurch.

Peter Hampton

We make important choices throughout our life; what schools our children will go to, what food we eat, what friends we have, where to go on holiday, and the values we instil in our children. Two of the biggest choices we have to make are; where we live and when to sell and buy. A crucial component of the process is selecting the right licensed real estate agent to guide you through the mountain of information and industry jargon. An agent can assist in the important task of Kathryn Hampton Personal Assistant identifying the right buyer for your house, as well as understand your unique requirements and make your next dream home a reality. It takes great negotiation and sales skills teamed with effective target marketing to deliver the very best results. I have obtained these skills and, with the help of Kathryn, I can offer you an exceptional real estate experience. When you make the choice to buy or sell your next home or investment please contact me to discuss the options. Licensed Sales Consultant

“Peter with the help of Kathryn decided that there future was dealing with people and property. Married to Kathryn, father of four, Peter has enjoyed the pleasure of parenting, coaching rugby and supporting his family. A keen tennis player, he loves those moments to enjoy a set or two as well as sharing time with his family. Energetic and committed, Peter and Kathryn have a long history in buying and selling properties. If the truth be told, he is energised by real estate and the opportunity it offers. Call him today.”
